The Benefits of Fluoride:

Fluoride has been proven to be effective in preventing and reversing the early stages of tooth decay. Fluoride makes the tooth structure stronger and more resistant to bacteria’s decay causing mechanisms. It also acts to repair, or remineralize, areas where bacteria’s attacks have already begun. In-office fluoride treatments protect the oral health of both children and adults by the above processes.  Though fluoride is beneficial for everyone, it is especially important for those who may be at a higher risk of developing decay. This includes those with:

 Active decay
High levels of decay causing bacteria
Exposed root surfaces of teeth
Decreased salivary flow or dry mouth
Existing restorations (fillings, crowns)
Poor diet
Undergoing radiation therapy
 Lack of regular dental care
Orthodontic treatment
Poor oral hygiene
Possible side effects of certain medications

Fluoride has also been found to give some patients relief from their dental sensitivity. Fluoride treatment may be recommended at each dental cleaning. Additional preventive measures may also be recommended if a patient is at a higher risk for developing decay.
